Welcome from the Chairman

It’s a privilege to be the Chairman of the Elham Gardening Society.

We are a very active society and welcome anyone wishing to join us. Our meetings take place on the third Thursday of each month in Peggy Pike Room at the Village Hall at 7.30pm; you won’t feel out of place and you can join there. Our Membership Secretary is Dick Athow (T: 01303840720).

None of us feel we are super efficient gardeners – we just like doing it, mistakes and all!

We often have major and local garden visits. Anyone is welcome to come along even if you are not yet a member. We have now established a four day annual tour in June to visit a series of gardens in various regions. The 2017 tour will be to Essex and Suffolk – the trip is nearly full but it sometimes happens that someone is unable to go. If you want to be placed on the waiting list contact me directly. Next years trip, 2018, will be to Dorset and may be extended to five days - people generally reserve space late in the current year for the following year.

You will be kept up to date about everything we do by regular emails if you are a Gardening Society member. Doug Martin manages this system and can also generally ensure that any feedback or enquiry reaches the right person to respond.

We have a popular Spring Show in April. This is the time to buy your potato for the "Potato in a Bucket" competition, and a geranium plug plant for the "Chairman's Challenge" both are judged in the main Annual Show. Normally there will be plants, and of course, home-made cakes for sale.

The Annual Summer Show is open to everyone and is now more than 125 years old.

It is regarded as one of the best in Kent! There is a wide range of Classes which not only cover Vegetables and Flowers but includes Domestic, Handicrafts, Art and Photography. There are nearly 100 different classes to chose from, so there should be something for everyone - why not try your luck! Our schedules and entry forms are available from our Show Secretaries:

Also available from Browns Estate Agents.

Our Open Gardens weekend takes place in June every other year. The next one is 2018.
They are in aid of the National Gardens Scheme.

Gerry Newman (01303 840947) is our programme secretary. This years can be found on the Events page of this website. He welcomes suggestions for visits and speakers, so let him know if you have some ideas.
